The Holland Foundation for Sight Restoration has been established as a 501(c)(3) organization to raise financial resources that support the education of surgeons in diagnosing and treating severe ocular surface disease and support the expansion of Centers of Excellence nationwide.

The Centers of Excellence will be staffed by corneal specialists trained in and utilizing Dr. Holland’s protocols. However, because of the lack of funding, some of these practices may not have the resources to provide the labor-intensive procedures on a broader scale.

“We have created a foundation to raise money for ophthalmologists to fund necessary positions at their practices and to break down the roadblocks we see challenging treatment for these patients at other institutions,” Dr. Holland told Ocular Surgery News.

In addition to the procedures performed by Dr. Holland and others, a transplant coordinator is a key component of the patients’ recovery. The coordinator manages immunosuppression protocols and tracks all patient labs. The Foundation is structured to provide funding for transplant coordinators for up to three years for each established COEs.

The Foundation will also identify regional nephrologists to provide immunosuppressional assistance at each COE.
